The noise was deafening as 14,000 chanting fans descended on the Barrovia Brawlers ‘graveyard’ stadium for a reprisal of the silver division grand finale, and they were not to be disappointed on a perfect day for bloodbowl. The vampires won the toss and elected to receive, only for the human altar to Nuffle to alight with a ‘foul frenzy’ prayer as Cindy Piewhistle strapped on her bandolier.
The kick went long and the vampires ripped the LOS apart, but the humans were coming for them. It took only two turns for the star runner to be KO’d - never to return to the pitch - and then the Brawler captain, Strahd himself, went down Badly Hurt only to regenerate. Only one pie flew before Cindy was floored and the Vampires were rushing to the end-zone, two vamps down and scoring early. This same tactic had cost them the game last time out against the Cockerells.
The humans received and meted out punishment on the LOS, and even though there were no SPP for fouling anymore, T. Werner wouldn’t stop, racking up six fouls and killing Heinrik the Thrall (whom the apothecary slipped some vamp blood to revive). The humans made a quick 1-2-3 with the thrower handing off to a blitzer who threw to another blitzer who in turn ran in the TD by turn 6. As the teams lined up for the third time, it was 11 humans v 10 vampires and pandemonium broke out.
The vampires pushed the ball forward, nearly scoring, only to be stopped by some slippery ground. The human catchers then began to jump over prone players, landing like ballerinas to first blitz and then attempt a score at the other end - but it was 1-1 at half time, the human coach being sent off for arguing the call when Cindy was ejected.
Second half, and 10 Barrowians lined up and kicked to the 11 humans. The Ogre, while scary, had done almost as little as the Vargheist, but the bloodlust was up as Kalitas the Vargheist tore the head off a poor human lineman #13 who had only recently joined the team. Keeping his cool, the Cockerell captain, Vicario, threw a perfect pass for a rehearsed TD play, but out of nowhere a lone thrall, #8 Hathor, intercepted the ball, bounced it to a vampire and turned everything around. Suddenly the vampires were storming toward the end zone.
The humans recovered, KO’d the ball carrier and desperately side-caged to learn a lesson in hypno gazing. The human ball carrier was pushed into the crowd only to be carried to the reserve box by the fans as the ball went exactly where the vampires had planned - halfway to the human end zone. The humans looked on in disgust, expressed by KO’ing a vampire and then surfing a thrall who the fans tore apart. But the ‘perfect plan’ for the vampire throw-in made it an inevitable 2-1 for the vampires with 3 turns to go.
Lining up 10 humans v 8 Brawlers, only two of whom were vampires, there was human hope. And despite trampling the vampires, the humans just couldn’t get the ball far enough forward, and when the brawlers locked down the last two scoring threats it was all over bar the singing. 2-1 to the brawlers, honour restored to Barovia, and a worthy win in a hard fought contest. The vampires will miss two thralls next games and most of their stars saw limited play time, but the humans lost a blitzer to an armour break but were otherwise unscathed in a classic bloodbath which is turning into a bit of a grudge match. |
