Grand Finals Rematch and Revenge Round 2 was a grudge match for the Brawlers against their long time rivals the Ostermark Cockerells. Defeat in the grand finals of Silver division was fresh in the mind, and the Vampires were determined not to let history repeat. The Cockerells had halfling star player Cindie Piewhistle to fill out their roster and play dirty tricks against the vampires. The pressure was on to score early for the vampires and get the bombadier menace sent off, but things started poorly with multiple failed attempts to pick up the ball by pro runner Elenda. Luckily she was still fast enough, to break through a hole in the human lines and score on turn 4.
The referee ignored fouls throughout the game by Catcher T. Werner, which sent off runner Anje early in the game, and she would fail to recover from her concussion. Veteran thrall Heinrich was killed in the first quarter of the game as well, but some hard work by the team apothecary means he'll just be missing the next game. Perhaps a tactical misplay, but history backs up this thrall's skill. #1 Vampire Strahd was also injured during the first quarter, but regeneration saw him return for the human offence. Vargheist Kalitas continues to prove his worth by badly injuring a thrall, first blood of the game.
The human offence was brutal on the line of scrimmage, with more KO's and stuns, but they were forced to score quickly by a deep vampire threat to the thrower, and pressure on possible receivers. With two turns remaining in the half, Runner Anje failed again to wake from their concussion and vampire offence two started down a player. A quick snap and some thralls and vampires penetrated the human field, giving several tempting targets to pass the ball to from Strahd. Unfortunately thrall Rudolf would fail to pick up the ball for a handoff on four separate rolls. The first half ended with a drawn scoreboard but the vampires down players. Anje still could not wake up.
The human drive started with the ref losing track of time, but a strong force of humans on the line (the only times the Ogre was paying enough attention to really contribute was at the start of drives, as he often spent multiple turns isolated in the midfields daydreaming). A few receivers were waiting, which the Brawlers tried to blitz down or surround, but the manpower disadvantage was beginning to stretch the Brawlers thin. The humans went for an exciting passing play when one vampire got too close to the thrower, which was deflected and nearly caught by Hathor. Momentum swung against the humans, and a side cage was established from the fumbled ball. This cage was in turn broken and replaced with a human sidecage, stomping Elenda into unconciousness in the process. In desperation, the Thrall Hathor surfed the human ball carrier, and the ball bounced into the awaiting arms of Strahd, who had previously been menacing the human backlines. He was able to walk the ball in with some support from Thrall Rudolf and put the vampire up 2:1. Neither vampire runner would awaken, and the Brawlers would play the final 3 turns of human offence 8 players to 10.
Another human line of scrimmage saw 2 thralls removed almost immediately, and the vampires were stretched to their limits dealing with penetrating threats. A sure draw was only prevented when the ball was fumbled off an accurate pass, in one of the few turnovers from a very well-played human team. With 2 players in scoring position for a final turn push, and most of the vampires walled off, it took multiple hypnotic gazes to free a blitzing path for Kalitas the Vargheist to blitz through and tag the ball, stunning one threat. Saazh the Thrall then followed up to pick up the ball and shelter next to the Vargheist. The humans were still in for a chance, but unfortunately as they blitzed the ball free a marking player caught it.
So silver league grand final was avenged for the Brawlers, and they rise to an early lead in gold division. Their next 2 games are against powerful Lizardmen teams, let's hope some Thralls survive. |

Brawlers pull through Gold Div. debut Their third season, first in gold division, has started off with a win for the Barrowvians, though it was touch and go. The wily Skaven coach chose to start the game with a kick, so the vampires had first drive. But the rats had schemes to capitalise on inevitable vampire fumbles, and a few unfortunate trips and a fumbled throw to a ready to score receive on turn 4 saw most of the vampire drive played in their own half. A tenacious defence despite 7 KOs and a regenerated injury, and the luck of the skaven runners drying up as they ran for the end zone saw the game drawn going into the Skaven half.
The induced Bloodwiser Keg was worth its weight in gold, ensuring that the Brawlers had a starting 11 for the second half, even if they would miss one runner. Some Brilliant Coaching, aided by an induced assistant coach, also saw them start the second drive with an extra reroll and some momentum. The ball moved from sideline to sideline but the rats could not make a deep penetration, and KOs and injuries turned against them when Kalitas, in true vargheist fashion, knocked himself, but removed the rat ogre from the pitch.
Runner Elenda made a break away towards the end zone with a sacked ball on turn 14, with only Rudolf the thrall in support. The ball was sacked and the vampire KOd on Skaven turn 15. A sprint by one vampire to provide a hypnotic gaze and Rudolf the thrall could blitz free, pick up the ball and use his Pro skill to rush across the try line.
With 1 turn remaining, the Gutter Runner Ratchiskit was set up for a 1-turn-touchdown. The kick was in the skaven favour, Ratchiskit was handed the ball and 2 chainpushes got him within striking range. He would need his dodge skill to get through the wall of vampires in the way, but as he rushed over the line his sure feet finally gave out, and the vampires were left 1:0 up at the end of the game. |

Cockerells Take the Coin Congratulations to the Ostermark Cockerells and their Coach, who game the Barrowvia Brawlers their second ever loss and secured their coin. The weather was poor for a finals game, with a blizzard roaring as the teams took position. The humans won the toss and elected to kick and let the vampires face the brunt of the storm. But the Blizzard was not enough to stop a swift score by the Brawlers, perhaps too swift as they left the humans with plenty of time to strike back. But the brutal humans were removing at least a player a turn from the pitch, and the team apothecary was called on on turn 2 to save star thrower Sorin from sitting out the finals.
The weather would change for the humans drive, but the violence wouldn't. Despite a spirited defence, the Cockerells managed to score on turn 8, and maintain their prodigious removal speed. Once recoveries from KOs were accounted for the Vampires were down 2 players, despite starting the game with a deep bench.
The Brawler's Thralls should be commended for their Never Surrender attitude in the second half, penetrating deep into the humans field and threatening the ball several times. Only one vampire was left to support by this point of the game, though a distracted Kalitas the Vargheist would contribute more this half than in the past season, with 2 removals on an isolated side of the pitch. Rudolf injuring the Ogre Bjerg will likely be a legendary tale for seasons to come. Unfortunately tenacious defence wasn't enough, as the humans played too well, and while it came down to the final few pick up, pass and catch rolls, man of the match T. Werner would cross the line for a 2-1 victory for the humans.
Congratulations also to Tor's Chosen, who defeated Serra's Angels and were hoping on a draw to take the coin for themself. |

Vampires enter finals with a chance to t Recovering from their previous two thrashings, the Barovia Brawlers have returned to form and go into the final round tied for second place after defeating Tor's Chosen in the semi-final round. Things started poorly in the first half, with Kalitas the Vargheist continuing the tradition of knocking themselves down and leaving the team vulnerable on their own drive. The Norse played very smartly, and scored a significant number of KOs, but with two runners left the vampires were still a threat and in scoring position on turn 7. The Norse Valkyries played well against their opposites and sacked the ball, but were unable to complete the pass needed to score and go into their own half with the advantage. Perhaps the highlight of the half was the Brawlers' apothecary returning star bloodbag Saazh from the dead, to keep key positions filled.
In the second half luck would favour the Brawlers. Enough players would return from the sideline that they were only down 1 player, and when Grynt the beer boar was sent off for fouling Kalitas by the referee (after 2 prior attempts going unnoticed), the spirit left the Norse. A solid defence, good kicking, use of their agility and hypnotic gazes let the vampires score twice in a row. With victory secure, and focusing on husbanding their strength for the finals, the Brawlers played conservatively for the final 3 turns. While no casualties were suffered, Kalitas ended the game as it began by knocking itself over before the vampires could stop the Norse touchdown.
The final round match will be against long time rivals at the top of Bronze league, the Ostermark Cockerells. This will be the first official meeting between the two sides, with both teams needing a win to secure a chance at the coin. No doubt both are wishing Tor's Chosen luck in their final game against Serra's Angels, as a win for the Angels will secure them indisputable first. Tor will be hoping for their own win, and the Brawlers and Cockerells to draw, if the Norse want to take the coin |
