Coming into this final round of the MBBL Division 2 season, both teams had outside chances of winning the championship, though neither could do so without other results going their way.
The Sultans received first, and attempted an early handoff which, if succussful would have seen skinks sprinting away from the lumbering undead and a certain 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, the catch was not made and the mistake defined the game's flow for much of the fist half. The Sultans and Shufflers took turns in swatting opponents away from the ball and, while both teams lost several players to injury, neither team seemed able to clear enough of a path to get their hands on the prize.
Finally, in the dying moments of the half Ptsss the crunchy, the Sultans only remaining skink, found a way to the ball. With a shield of saurus guarding his rear, he scampered over the line to break the deadlock.
The deeper bench and regenerative powers of the Shufflers were to be key factors in the second half. Able to field a full team, the Shufflers outnumbered the Sultans and began to display their now typical brutish behaviour. Flagrantly abusing the rules, the Shufflers time and again sought to kick players while they were down and the tactic seemed to work. Despite having three players sent off, the Shufflers managed to overwhelm the Sultans with a series of harsh blows culminating in the fatal foul of Kroxinator, the brute kroxigor whose strength had been causing some degree of difficulty for the tomb guards.
While the thuggery continued the Sultans played their final trump - a wizard hired for just this game. His lightning bolt did manage to knock the ball free, but the lack of numbers meant the Sultans could not capitalise. After several minutes of ball fumbling, finally a rookie skeleton managed to grab hold of the ball and run it across the line to equalise.
The restart allowed just enough time for the Sultans to score, but the play unsurprisingly failed and the game ended in a draw.
While both teams assured themselves of promotion to Division 1, the result ensures the championship for the Ratsburg Steelers. |
