Whilst coach Simian was touring a local market (scouting for training supplies), he stumbled upon Artie in the midst of a scrum, fighting off 17 grandmothers all desperate to purchase the last pound of Bretonnian manticore cheese which Artie had in his possession.

Simian was so impressed by the fact that Artie still held on to the cheese despite his injuries (3 cracked ribs, broken ankle, and several cane-induced contusions) that he offered the plucky halfing a contract on the spot.
