When it came to spending 640,000 in inducements, rather than let Star Players hog all the glory, I decided to protect my boys as best I could (a bribe, an extra apothecary & a Bloodweiser babe) and help them play the way they like - dirty! (wizard and a good karma & 2 dirty tricks cards)
Eagles got FAME advantage and pouring rain would plague us for the entire match.
Let the orcs receive and tried to get get early numbers advantage by isolating lone players and gang fouling them - with mixed results - 4 attempts gave me a death(!!!!) apoth'd to MNG and a couple of stuns. Obvious hometown ref today so bribe wasn't needed.
Was able to hold off the Hotspores advance and luckily suffered only one serious injury which travelling apothecary reduced to BH (both sides were having problems converting downed players into casualties). Snuck an extra player onto the field (with a dirty trick) to base the orc ball carrier.
Used wizard to pop ball free, injuring an orc thrower in the process. Scooped up ball with my catcher but orc retaliatory blitz stripped the ball free and into the crowd who promptly threw it to other side of pitch where only black orcs were. Neither side managed to recover the ball and we went into halftime scoreless.
Unsure how long I could withstand so much block, guard and mighty blow I decided to try and score relatively quickly and then try to stall the orcs. That WAS the plan and it eventually worked just a few turns later than expected. Again, was lucky, and didn't suffer too many armour breaks and those that did only resulted in stuns. During the drive the Eagles managed to KO goblin and an orc blitzer; only the gobbo recovered meaning I had the numbers in my favour.
Set up with three turns left and the humans dug one last time into their bag of tricks: a Rune of Fear which, the hedge wizard who sold the magical rune assured coach Simian, would cause the Eagles players to appear as the most frightening thing their opponent's minds could imagine. The problem was the humans faced orcs and, as everyone knows, orcs don't have much in the way of minds. Result, three Eagles' players hurt including my ogre (dropped by the Numas troll, Beer Money Inc.).
Obviously Beer Money Inc. worked up an awful hunger smacking around an ogre because on the very last turn wound up swallowing MAIN GUUUY! whole instead of throwing him down the pitch to score the equaliser! |
